Polymer clay is a versatile oven-bake sculpting material used for sculptures, miniatures, figures, jewelry, ornaments, charms, and countless other creative projects. Unlike ceramic clay or air-dry clay, polymer clay remains workable until it is cured with heat.

Polymer clay is a manufactured modeling compound typically based on PVC particles combined with plasticizers, pigments, fillers, and other ingredients that give the material its sculptable properties.
It is called "clay" because it can be shaped and modeled much like traditional clay.

Polymer clay does not cure simply by being exposed to air. It remains workable until it is heated to the curing temperature specified by the manufacturer.
This is one of the major advantages of polymer clay for detailed sculpture. You can work on a sculpture over multiple sessions without racing against a drying clock.

The biggest difference is how the materials harden.
Air-dry clay cures through exposure to air as moisture leaves the material. Polymer clay remains workable at room temperature and cures through heat.
Because polymer clay does not gradually dry while you're sculpting, it is particularly useful for projects that require a lot of time, adjustment, or fine detail.

The term "modeling clay" can refer to several different materials.
Many traditional modeling clays are wax- or oil-based materials designed to remain permanently soft and reusable. They are useful for practice, maquettes, animation, or temporary models but may not be intended to permanently cure.
Polymer clay is designed to be sculpted and then permanently cured with heat.
Always check the packaging to determine exactly what type of modeling material you're working with.

Polymer clay generally experiences very little dimensional change during curing compared with materials such as ceramic clay or many air-dry clays.
Exact behavior varies by formulation, so projects requiring extremely precise dimensions should always be tested with the specific clay being used.
How long can you work with polymer clay before it dries out?
Polymer clay does not air dry, so there is no traditional working-time limit.
You can leave an unfinished sculpture and return to it later. Protecting the piece from dust, lint, excessive heat, and physical damage is usually more important than preventing the clay from drying.

Polymer clay can remain usable for a very long time when stored properly, but its consistency may change with age or poor storage conditions.
Older clay may become firmer and require additional conditioning. Clay that has been exposed to excessive heat can begin curing prematurely and may become difficult or impossible to restore.
Store polymer clay in a cool environment away from direct sunlight and heat.
Working with Polymer Clay

Usually, yes.
Conditioning means working the clay until it becomes uniformly pliable and ready to sculpt. Depending on the formulation, this may involve kneading, rolling, folding, compressing, or repeatedly passing the clay through a suitable roller.
Properly conditioned clay should feel consistent throughout without hard chunks or crumbly areas.
Avoid aggressively incorporating air while conditioning, since trapped air can cause bubbles or other problems later.

Start by cutting or breaking the clay into manageable pieces. Warm it gradually with your hands and compress, roll, fold, or knead it until the texture becomes consistent.
A clear acrylic roller can help flatten and compress clay during conditioning, while a clay roller with thickness rings is useful when you want consistent slabs or sheets.
The goal is not simply to make the clay warm. You are trying to create a smooth, uniform working consistency throughout the material.

Polymer clay can feel firm because of the formulation itself, cool room temperatures, age, or insufficient conditioning.
Begin by cutting the clay into smaller pieces and conditioning it gradually. The warmth from your hands and repeated compression can make many firm clays significantly easier to work with.
Do not attempt to soften polymer clay by heating it to baking temperatures. Excessive heat can begin the curing process.

Polymer clay can become very soft when it gets warm from your hands, the room, direct sunlight, or repeated handling.
Try giving the clay a short break and allowing it to cool before continuing. Working on a clean, smooth surface can also make softer clay easier to control.
Different polymer clay formulations have very different levels of softness, tackiness, and resistance, so finding the right formulation for your sculpting style can make a major difference.

Soft and firm formulations primarily differ in how much resistance they provide while you work.

Neither is universally better.

Not every formulation has been tested for long-term water submersion. For best results, use distilled water rather than tap water, and make sure any paint, glaze, adhesive, or sealer used on the sculpture is also suitable for prolonged water exposure. Keep in mind that a sealer does not automatically make polymer clay waterproof. Glycerin may also be added to the water to slow the movement of glitter or artificial snow, but it is not required for the clay itself. Also, keep in mind outdoor paint does not necessarily mean it can be submerged in water forever.

An armature acts as the skeleton of the sculpture. It establishes the pose and provides structural support beneath the clay.

An armature is an internal support structure built before or during the sculpting process.
For character sculpture, it may represent the skeleton of the figure. Wire establishes the basic pose and proportions, while aluminum foil or other appropriate bulking materials can be added around it before the final clay layer.
Building the structure first allows you to create larger sculptures without relying on thick masses of solid polymer clay.

The appropriate wire thickness depends on the size and structure of the sculpture.
Heavier wire provides more support for major structural elements, while thinner wire is easier to bend and useful for smaller parts or secondary structures.

For important structural connections, do not rely entirely on surface adhesive when a mechanical connection such as wire, a pin, or another internal support can also be used.
Personally, I do not typically glue large pieces of polymer clay together after baking. For attaching small parts though I love a good gel super glue.
Always test an unfamiliar adhesive for compatibility before using it on a finished sculpture.

A sculpture may be mechanically anchored to a wooden base with wire, pins, or other hardware, or attached after curing using an appropriate adhesive.
If wood, finishes, adhesives, or hardware will go into the oven with the clay, verify that every material involved can safely tolerate the required curing temperature.
Polymer Clay Safety

Many polymer clay products are sold as non-toxic art materials, but you should check the labeling and safety information for the specific product you're using.
In the United States, the ACMI AP seal is one indicator that an art material has undergone toxicological evaluation for its intended use.
"Non-toxic" does not mean edible or appropriate for every possible application. Always follow the manufacturer's directions and normal art-material safety practices.

Do not assume that polymer clay is approved for direct food contact simply because it is labeled non-toxic.
A material being safe for its intended use as an art material is different from being tested and approved for use as a food-contact surface.
Unless the manufacturer specifically states otherwise, avoid using polymer clay for surfaces that will directly hold, serve, prepare, or contact food or beverages.

Many polymer clay manufacturers allow their products to be cured in a household oven when the clay is used exactly as directed.

Wash your hands after working with polymer clay, particularly before eating or preparing food.
Keeping clean hands is also useful before sculpting because dirt, lint, oils, pigments, and other contaminants can transfer onto the clay.

Unless the manufacturer specifically states that a polymer clay product has been tested and approved for aquarium or animal-habitat use, do not assume that it is safe for that purpose.
A polymer clay being labeled non-toxic means it has been evaluated for its intended use as an art material. It does not automatically mean the material has been tested for long-term submersion in water, contact with aquarium inhabitants, or situations where an animal may lick, chew, scratch, or ingest part of the material. Major polymer clay manufacturers have specifically noted that their products have not necessarily been tested for aquarium use.
Applying a glaze or sealer does not automatically make polymer clay aquarium-safe or animal-safe either. For aquariums, terrariums, reptile enclosures, or other animal habitats, use materials specifically identified by their manufacturer as suitable for that environment.
Storing Polymer Clay

Store uncured polymer clay in a cool location away from direct sunlight and heat.
Do not store it somewhere that can become extremely hot, such as inside a vehicle or beside a heating vent, because excessive heat can affect the clay.
Protect opened clay from dust and contamination between sculpting sessions.

Often, but not every plastic reacts the same way with every polymer clay formulation.
Raw polymer clay contains plasticizers that can react with incompatible plastics, causing them to soften, deform, or even appear to "melt" over time. Polypropylene plastic, identified by recycling symbol #5 (PP), is generally suitable for storing raw polymer clay and is a good choice for containers and bags.
Avoid leaving raw polymer clay in prolonged contact with unfamiliar plastics. It can also stain or damage wood surfaces, including unfinished wood, as well as some painted or finished surfaces. When in doubt, store raw clay in its original packaging, a polypropylene #5 container or bag, or on a polymer-clay-safe work surface.

Polymer clay does not air dry in the same way as air-dry clay, but some flexible polymer clay formulations can begin to dry at the surface or develop cracks when left exposed for extended periods before curing.
If you are working with a flexible polymer clay, plan your sculpting sessions so you can bake the piece when you are finished for the day rather than leaving the completed uncured sculpture sitting out overnight. If you do need to pause, follow the manufacturer's storage recommendations and keep the piece protected from air, dust, lint, excessive heat, pets, and accidental contact.
Polymer Clay Problems and Troubleshooting

Cracking can have several causes, including inadequate conditioning, insufficient curing, structural stress, weak connections, trapped air, or problems with the way a thick sculpture was constructed.
Look at where the crack occurs.
Cracks around thin limbs or joints may suggest a structural problem, while widespread weakness can indicate a curing issue.
For larger sculptures, using a strong internal armature and avoiding unnecessary masses of solid clay can help reduce structural problems.

Air can become trapped while conditioning, folding, layering, or applying clay over an internal form.
Work deliberately and compress clay rather than repeatedly trapping pockets of air between layers.
When covering aluminum foil cores or baked sections, pay attention to the contact between the clay and the underlying surface.

The clay may be very soft, very warm, or naturally more sensitive to pressure.
Allowing warm clay to cool and handling completed surfaces less frequently can help.
Sculpting with tools instead of constantly using your fingertips also allows you to refine forms without repeatedly imprinting the surface.

Brittleness can result from the characteristics of the formulation, insufficient curing, excessive stress on a thin section, or the structural design of the piece.
First verify that you followed the manufacturer's temperature and baking-time requirements.
For delicate sculptural elements, consider whether the section needs internal support or whether a more flexible polymer clay formulation would be better suited to the project.

Discoloration may indicate excessive heat or exposure to a hot spot or heating element.
Use an oven thermometer to check the actual temperature inside the oven and keep the sculpture away from direct radiant heat.

Start with versatile tools rather than buying dozens of specialized tools before you know what you actually use.

Sculpt as much as you can!!
There really is no shortcut to getting better. Every time you sit down with a piece of clay, you're learning something… how the material moves, how much pressure to use, what tools work for you, how to build better forms, and how to fix the things that aren't working.
Don't get discouraged if what you make doesn't look the way you pictured it in your head. You're going to make things you love and things you absolutely hate, and both are part of becoming a better sculptor. Focus on the big shapes and proportions first, then worry about the tiny details. A beautifully detailed sculpture still won't feel right if the structure underneath it isn't working.
And don't be afraid to tear something apart and do it again. That's one of the best things about polymer clay: until you bake it, you can keep pushing it, changing it, rebuilding it, and figuring it out. Be patient with yourself, keep making things, and I promise the improvement sneaks up on you. One day you'll look back at something you made a year ago and realize just how far you've come.
